About Me

I am a journalist with more than three years of experience reporting at Appalachian State University and in Washington, D.C. I report on topics ranging from government technology, to breaking news, to election coverage and human interest stories for The Appalachian, App State’s student-run newspaper.

I am from North Carolina, originally from the Raleigh-Durham region, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, before I moved to Boone to study journalism at Appalachian State University where I went on to land a job with MeriTalk in January 2025, reporting on the federal government from the nation's capital.

These experiences have given me profound insight into vastly different communities and what makes each community unique and worth being shared, making me a better journalist.

I have a specific fascination with political journalism as I have covered the federal government in my professional career and I have served as the Political Editor for The Appalachian, spearheading the coverage of the 2022 midterm election and 2024 presidential election.

In my time as political editor, I sought to emphasize coverage that appealed to readers who were voting for the first time as well as seasoned voters who were intimately familiar with the process.

The diversity of my community has always shaped my reporting. Getting information out in a timely manner that represents the widest range of perspectives has always been in the forefront of my reporting. I passionately seek to understand the complexities of the communities I live in and learn about each day, a process that began while living up in one of the fastest growing areas in the United States and when moving to Boone.

Covering a wide range of topics has been something that motivates my writing and informs the way I tell stories. This motivation brought him to the position of Associate Enterprise Editor with the Appalachian where I sought to pursue narrative journalism.

I expanded my storytelling methods to engage audiences with compelling stories on niche communities and people. The environment of Boone provided a plethora of opportunities to tell stories and narratives that were engaging and compelling ranging from team profiles to primarily Black communities in Boone, to student profiles. This was further influenced as I reported at WUNC radio in Durham, North Carolina, over the summer of 2024.

This experience came to a head as I covered high profile congressional hearings, court cases, and presidential decisions in my time reporting on government and technology from Washington, D.C., with MeriTalk.

I am committed to upholding the standards outlined in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. In reporting any variety of story, seeking truth and reporting it is a standard of the highest importance to me. I also recognize the potential for harm in the lives of those who choose to share personal stories to inform my writing and will commit to  protecting my sources.

In addition, I will not hold membership to any political organization, donate to a political cause or demonstrate for a particular cause. Additionally, I ensure that my methods are fair and transparent, with a tenacious commitment to readers and supporters of my work.
