Meet the Candidates: Board of commissioners and sheriff – The Appalachian

Election Day is Nov. 8 and with 19 candidates on the local ballot, Watauga voters have many decisions to make. The Appalachian has curated responses to questions on certain policy positions of candidates in local office.

The questions and responses below are curated from The Boone Chamber of Commerce’s “Meet The Candidates” event held at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country Oct. 6.

Plemmons Student Union opens for early voting – The Appalachian

Early voting began Thursday in North Carolina. Watauga County voters gathered to cast their ballots in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of the Plemmons Student Union throughout the day.

Voting will continue in the union and other locations until Nov. 5. Voters who are not registered can still do so at their early voting site through one-stop early voting.

Boone celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. To commemorate this milestone, the Town of Boone has planned many events throughout 2022 recognizing Boone’s uniqueness in the last 150 years, including a summer concert series at the Jones House, nightly summer performances at Horn in the West and “Boone Reads Together;” a reading program focusing on a celebration of local history and the stories of Boone.

The Watauga County Public Library hosted its fourth Boone Reads Together book talk Saturday, celebrating Boone’s 150th anniversary.

Boone Reads Together is a bi-monthly library event held throughout the year to reflect on certain literature written by or about community members in Boone.

App State Wellness and Prevention offers free naloxone, fentanyl test kits

App State to require proof of COVID vaccine for employees

Beginning Monday, App State will require all employees to upload their vaccination cards, shifting away from the current attestation form that faculty and staff fill out, the university announced in an update Friday.

Vaccinated students on campus are currently required to submit their vaccination status or undergo weekly testing. Vaccinated students living off campus are strongly encouraged to submit their vaccination status as well. Vaccinated faculty must submit their results by Oct. 29.
